Matthew 24: 37 “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”

In this verse, when Jesus was talking about the days of His second coming, he mentioned that the last days would be like the days of Noah. But what were the days of Noah like? Genesis 6 describes those days for us. It was a time when wickedness abounded on the earth. Things were so bad that God was sorry He had made man on the earth and He was grieved in His heart (Gen. 6: 6).

Wickedness abounds on earth today too. Everywhere we look we see some form of sin displayed – homosexual activity, murder, adultery, stealing, all sorts of vices and addictions. In the days of Noah, God sent a major flood to wipe out all of mankind except Noah and his family. This was God’s judgment upon man. When Jesus returns to earth, there will also be a time of judgment upon all man. Are we prepared to stand before Him and be judged?

Noah and his family were prepared. They built an ark according to God’s instructions and were preserved from the flood. We can also be prepared for the coming judgment.

Ephesians 5:15-18 tells us to “walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.”

There are 2 areas we can be prepared in before the Lord returns – in our character and in our spiritual life.


Our character (vs 15-16)

We need to be among those who are wise and walk in the ways of the Lord, not among the wicked (fools). (Read also the Parable of the Wheat and Tares in Matthew 13:24-30, 37-43.)


Our spiritual life (vs 18)

We need also to be walking in the spirit. When the Lord returns, we want to be filled with the Spirit, ready to meet Him, and not be caught by surprise, still fulfilling our fleshly desires. (Read also the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1-13.)

Therefore, having heard the warnings that Jesus gave regarding the last days, let us be prepared to meet Him when He returns.
